Three Lions Coach Shares The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
Ten years back, Barry was playing at a lower division club. Today, he's dedicated to assist the head coach secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from player to coach began as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.
Rapid Rise
His advancement is incredible. Starting with his first major job, he developed a name with creative training and strong interpersonal abilities. His club career took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached big names such as world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream and then you plan: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
Driven Leaders
The assistant coach says along with the manager as extremely driven. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command every metre of the pitch and that's our focus most of our time to. We must not just to keep up of the trends but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We need to execute a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to know-how to performance.
“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed their place at the finals by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; on the contrary. Now is the moment to build on the team's style, to maintain progress.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody everything that is good of English football,” he comments. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.
“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and focus more on action.
“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data these days. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo in that central area.”
Thirst for Improvement
Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. During his education for the top coaching badge, he had concerns about the presentation, as his cohort featured big names including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations available to him to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard included won over and he brought Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that Chelsea removed virtually all of his coaches except Barry.
Lampard’s successor with the club took over, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he brought Barry over away from London to work together again. The Football Association consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
