The Reze Arc Movie Tops Domestic Cinema Earnings in Debut Weekend

Did Sony repeated their success? In the wake of the box office performance of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned more than $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has surpassed the hundred-million-dollar threshold globally, reaching a global total of $108M during its debut. This movie outperformed the thriller Black Phone 2 (almost $13 million) in its second week in theaters, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Notable Domestic and Global Earnings

The work of director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It grossed over $18 million in North America after a powerful $5.2M Saturday and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday take. Internationally, the MAPPA-produced feature grossed $14.7 million across 46 international territories, pushing its worldwide total to $60.4 million under Sony ($43.1 million overseas, $18.2M stateside). Official totals are still pending from Sony its official box office total.

Parallels to Other Anime Hits

Anime marketing agency a leading anime marketing group had earlier commented, comparing the film’s projected performance to the anime hit Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34 million in the North America in 2022 and opened to a comparable $18 million in the U.S.. The new film's first weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross presently stands slightly below Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M total earnings. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will achieve the earnings seen by mega hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for Sony.

Marketing Efforts Fuel Performance

Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged audience interaction to drive their dominance at the cinema for anime films. This film's marketing campaign launched at Anime Expo Los Angeles in summer with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a notable appearance at NYCC featuring exclusive clips, audience giveaways, and more MAPPA sessions. Moreover, organizers held an special preview for fans for moviegoers and content creators as well after the last day of the gathering.

What’s Next

2025 is a big year for anime, and for Sony, which has another feature-length anime premiering this year in Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
