Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
