SNAP Payments Set to Cease for Tens of Millions Amid Continuing US Government Shutdown
USDA officials declared on Saturday that SNAP funds under one of the country’s largest support systems won't be issued in November because of the continuing federal closure.
Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks
The funding lapse lasted its 25th day when the announcement was made, which followed calls from over 200 House Democrats asking the department to access reserve accounts to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.
“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “Now, assistance will not be provided” starting next month.
Millions Affected
Over 40 million Americans count on the regular assistance, according to official statistics. Various areas, including New Mexico, use of SNAP affects 21% of residents.
Internal communications seen by a major news agency revealed that the department chose not to tap emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.
Partisan Impasse
Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked about the way to finance and restart the federal government.
Comments by the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that the White House could have acted to act sooner to avoid interruption in payments.
“It could have, and should have made moves earlier to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the comments added. “Rather, they might decide against it to secure political leverage” as Republicans seek to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a funding package that would resume government operations.
States Prepare
Executives in Louisiana and Virginia issued emergency declarations this week to allocate funds for hunger relief in anticipation of nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
