Outrage as Popular South African DJ Gunned Down in Johannesburg.
A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with rampant crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was approached by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before running away.
The purpose behind the attack is unknown and no arrests have taken place, police said.
How It Happened
Law enforcement indicated that Stock was attacked as he was departing from a location close to the Carlton Centre.
He had been present for hours at the property supervising the installation of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.
"Authorities believe the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement stated.
Surveillance tape showed a suspect with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.
Police added that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the assault.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were found at the location.
Appeal for Witnesses
Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to contact them.
"We know they walked a long distance after the attack, and police have been attempting to locate them to determine their whereabouts," added an official.
A Nation in Mourning
His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," she said.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about subjects not many people were ready to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."
She requested the community to not sharing explicit content from the incident, noting this was an deeply traumatic time, especially for Stock's young family.
His Professional Legacy
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that was broadcast on a popular local broadcasting platform.
Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was engaged in various commercial activities, including private security, providing VIP protection services and managing safety for prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in property management and participated in building evictions.
National Shock
His murder has caused national trauma and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and political parties.
A government minister remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's murder.
"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even spoke up against me and my decisions as a public official. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.
A public representative stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a shock for all South Africans".
A media executive said that "DJ Warras was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought joy and energy to every moment on screen. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."
In a statement, the channel he worked for declared Stock was known for his magnetism, warmth and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
