Joshua Reaffirms on Inflammatory "Kill" Remarks Aimed at Jake Paul
Anthony Joshua stood by his controversial comments about wanting to “kill” Jake Paul during a news conference in Miami on midweek.
These statements were initially uttered on the previous day when the boxer was asked if he would show restraint against the social media star, responding that “if I can kill you, I'll kill”.
Saturday's bout against the internet personality turned fighter has drawn concern over the risk involved and the size difference between the two athletes.
Tyson Fury Labels AJ a “Classless Loser”
Ex- titleholder Tyson Fury called Anthony Joshua a “classless loser” for his inflammatory comments.
But Joshua, explained his position: “This is what I do, we fight. We have a licence to kill.
“I understand many people don't understand it but this is what my job is. I love what I do. Whatever happens, happens - provided that my hand is held high, that's what's paramount, respectfully.”
He stated, “That's just the psychology we have to have as fighters. I don't know if other fighters think that way. Perhaps they're a bit more tame. The way my mind works. When you're in the squared circle, it's a risky thing. Everything can happen.”
“You wish your opponent leaves the ring safely, but if they don't, you still have to go to bed aware you just did your job. It wasn't personal.”
Jake Paul's Incendiary Response
Paul, a massive underdog in the heavyweight contest as a career cruiserweight, was no less incendiary in his reply.
“This is a contemporary gladiator sport,” Paul declared. “I'm prepared. I want his most powerful punches. I want there to be no excuses when it's all said and done. Let's kill each other.”
Joshua will face his opponent, in his twenties, at Miami's arena in a fight many regard as a major mismatched contest, with some arguing it should have been approved as an exhibition bout.
The professional contest will be fought over eight three-minute rounds using standard ten-ounce padded gloves, with a stipulated weight limit for the former champion.
Joshua Says He Was “Called In to Save” The Sport
Despite the vulgar terminology used, Joshua said he has been “called in to rescue” the sport of boxing.
“They want me to put an end to the Jake Paul phenomenon and I comprehend it and that's why I have to bear boxing on my back in this fight,” he added.
The event also had more humorous exchanges, with AJ smiling as Paul sang ‘London Bridge Is Falling Down’ to him.
The final staredown passed peacefully, with the underdog striking a bizarre posture before the champion remained composed and playfully grabbed his chain.
Both Fighters Dismiss Pre-Arranged Allegations
The peculiar nature of this bout has led to rumors about its authenticity, including suggestions that Joshua may be restricted from scoring a knockout.
“There's nothing in the contract, AJ can attest to it. We're going to war,” Paul said.
Joshua, wearing a expensive chain, jokingly added, “The only thing in the agreement that got my attention was the payment.”
He has claimed on his platforms that the total purse will be exceptionally large.
Largest Shock in Sport's History?
Paul first gained fame as an digital influencer, amassing a massive social media following.
He has not faced anyone of the former champion's pedigree but maintained that his opponent would not underestimate him.
“It's a wise move on his part,” he commented. “This could potentially be, and will be, the biggest defeat of his life.”
A win for Paul would be arguably the biggest surprise in the boxing's history.
It would certainly leave an permanent mark on his record, but the athlete stated it would not mean retirement.
“I would come back again, shake it off,” he said. “I will be main eventing again in a year or two. That's life. I'm a player in the game.”
