Heavy Rains Worsen Conditions for Evacuated Palestinians in Gaza, UN Caution
Heavy precipitation over the recent period have compounded the precarious living conditions of the vast number of evacuated residents in the Gaza Strip, as stated by aid agencies.
"Terrible" Weather Creates Grave Risks
A spokesman described the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with rain so intense that up to 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"The recent weather was truly terrible for the families. The downpours were so strong... And the winds were so strong," said the spokesperson.
Authorities voice grave anxiety that young ones living in tents in wet attire will contract hypothermia and other illnesses.
Casualties and Widespread Damage
Medical officials have reported that one baby has succumbed from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have died in roof cave-ins caused by the storms.
Further statements suggest a greater fatality count. Officials stated that numerous structures had totally fallen and dozens had collapsed partially.
- Nearly 55,000 families impacted by flooding.
- More than 40 official refuges inundated.
- Countless residents required to find new shelter.
Relief Efforts Seen as Inadequate
Organizations have escalated shipments of shelter, blankets and clothing since the ceasefire started, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Agencies are working relentlessly to provide that relief and to hand it out, but the magnitude of the necessities is so immense that we continue to see many thousands of individuals and minors who are really suffering each evening," stated one official.
Future Challenges and Truce Provisions
The next stage of the truce includes proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of military forces, and other terms.
Relief organizations have stressed the need for "expanded and ongoing relief to meet urgent and ongoing needs."
The hostilities was triggered by an assault in late 2023. Later military operations have resulted in a significant number of casualties in the area, as per official data.
