France will start stopping small boats in English Channel after British demands
French officials have consented to begin intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to disable the engines of the vessels.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
