The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
