Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

The contract includes that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.

Posting Fee and Historical Context

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to suit up for the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 soon, bolsters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a last-place season, placing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out often, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that scored teammates for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The following day in the final against the United States, he slugged a game-tying shot in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be officially presented at a press conference on Monday.
