Arne Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains The Club's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Loss
Arne Slot acknowledged that it was natural for doubts to be raised about his position following another heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their 9th defeat in twelve games, marking the team's poorest streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Dutch league champions on a punishing night at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I have got significant backing from the top,” the coach stated.
“It would be nice to turn it around and earn three points of course but if you are coaching a team and struggling then it's typical that people question you.”
He noted, “I am OK with my situation. It is not the initial instance I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Discussions with The Board
Upon being questioned to expand on his dialogues with the team officials, Slot said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive for the squad and to me and those talks happen but they don’t call me all the time of the day to say they back me.”
He further stated, “In the normal conversations we have I perceive the confidence. However I've not talked to them since this defeat yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Issues and Player Response
Slot lamented familiar failings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don't have to wait to reflect. I’m past getting mad inside. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He added, “It's difficult because I’m playing for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I've watched Liverpool all my life.”
“In recent memory, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a spell of this nature with results this poor.”
He concluded, “However we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And until that badge is removed, we’re always going to compete.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to where it needs to be, demonstrate to all again the values of this club and why people call it the best team in the world.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it must improve.”
